How can we shape our learning? A look at drawing with my sister & nephew.
I love dropping in for a visit with my sister. My nephew often bounces around creating a flurry of energy directed towards his project of the moment, while my sister and I chat about the world and life.
One shiny Sunday I was enjoying their company, my nephew was drawing while my sister and I chatted. I relaxed into the perfection of the moment.
In an earlier version of my life, I had been a teacher – one enthusiastic about pushing the limits of connections between student, technology, and the environment.
Forever curious and looking to experiment, I pulled out my phone and asked my nephew if I could take a photo of his drawing.
I uploaded it to ChatGPT
Prompt: Turn this into an image.
Could have been better, I thought. “Oooooo!!!! That’s so cool!” responded my nephew when I showed him the result.
Spurred on I asked him, “Is there anything you would like to add?”
I made adjustments to prompts while he continued his own drawing.
The suggestions flew, “Can you make it futuristic? With metal plates and add a lasers? Can you put the dinosaur on a motorcycle?”
My sister threw in ideas too, “How cool would it be if the dinosaur was on money? Like Dino Bucks?”
“Yeah!” Her son replied.
I prompted – we were not disappointed.
My friend and I have differing opinions on ChatGPT. They tell me the images are stolen, and therefore are breaching copyright.
“AI can’t create art.”
To her, art is valuable only when you are create it yourself.
I do agree there is a temptation to use AI to replace full process and using AI to purposefully take from other people’s work and sell it is unethical. For this kind of process, the feedback loop might be seen as:
But what about when you are using works as a spark to collage your own ideas and enhance your exploration? (or amplify your exploration) I see this as an extension of the creative creation journey; a way to merge the two.
Better yet, why not put it into the Escalations Archetype and see the iterations continue in a cycle until a limiting factor is placed on the process?
The escalations model fit for this purpose, would mean a loop of prompting AI which influences human drawing, which influences the prompts made to the AI. This is a simplistic view. The process would include a delay in the human iteration, and a greater generation of prompting AI as this is convenient… and addictive.
My nephew took the ideas from our iterations and all of a sudden I could see how ChatGPT had influenced his creation.
“Did you add that from this image?”
“Yeah,” he said.
He was so casual about it.
His attitude towards working with AI has not been shaped yet. And there is a window of opportunity here. To help the individual agent understand the everyday systems around them, and help them to use the systems for their own designed direction.

One of my experiments putting together this piece was to get ChatGPT to create instructions from my anecdote. I guess the urge to teach never really left me!
